Since 1999, iEARN Egypt and its partners the Ministry of Education in Egypt, the Regional English Language Program Office (RELO) at the Embassy of the United States of America in Cairo and the Regional Information Technology and Engineering Center (RITSEC) have been working collaboratively on developing the iEARN activities and operation in Egypt. Policies and procedures are regulated by the Board of Directors, which was developed by a ministerial decree.
In academic year 2002 - 2003 , the number of participating Egyptian schools has reached 35 schools in different governorates involved in a variety of iEARN projects on environment, civics education, global issues and human rights. All schools are conducting their projects with selected English Language teachers and interested students as extra curricula activities.
The emphasis is on upgrading student computer/internet skills, English language ability and exposure to real-life, authentic texts and themes. Projects focused on learner-centered teaching, cooperative and interactive learning and development of life skills - critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution and teambuilding.
iEARN Egypt runs a variety of programs and projects including the BRIDGE (Building Respect through Internet Dialogue and Global Education), CIVICS 4 (Collaborative Voices for Collaborative Solutions) and FTE (Friendship through Education).
Professional educators are handling a formative evaluation for the different programs. Students' high interest and enthusiasm has been a great asset to the development of the operation. It is all reflected in their projects, building of character and real life skills. Students have participated in different international events as IEARN International Conference and Youth Forum in South Africa in 2001, in Moscow in 2002, YouthCan in 2000 and 2002, Youth Leadership |
